As a family photographer, I can confidently tell you your kids are the star of the show.


There's absolutely no denying it. You're booking that family session with the purpose of documenting your kids at this age, phase, time they're in right now. This is a perfectly acceptable reason! Your family should be celebrated and the photos will have your reminiscing for years to come. The little ones are adorable, the parents are glowing... it's all incredibly picturesque and deserves to be shared for other to enjoy as well.


This leads me to one of the questions I get asked often: why you don't see many children's faces on my website and social media?


And I get it. How can I be a family photographer and not share photos of the kids? Isn't that the whole point of my career field?


Well, yes. This is my line of work and I enjoy every moment of it very much. And I do share photos of them... creatively.


You see, the answer for me is plain and simple: to protect their identities from an extremely public world.

Photographers are public service providers. And in our current times, we have to rely on the internet to advertise ourselves versus word of mouth and telephone pole flyers like the good ol' days. That means our information, location, methods of contact are all over multiple forums and platforms.


Anyone from around the world at anytime can visit my sites.


Other reasons include:

  • Kids can't meaningfully consent to having an online presence.
  • Images on the internet can live forever.
  • I want your sites to be safe spaces.
  • You'd rather protect a child's privacy than gain engagement.


So, from a professional standpoint, I do not feel comfortable or it is my right to share the faces of minors.


This isn't because I think parents shouldn't share photos of their children. In fact, I so very hope you do share them! But I do leave it up to you what you feel comfortable sharing. Every family gets to decide what's right for them. This is simply a decision I've made for my own business and the way I share my work.


I still photograph children—I just don't make them the centerpiece of your public marketing without careful consideration.

What I'll Share Instead


Emotions don't need a face! I'll post the fun, sweet, cute, and loving moments in both faceless ways and the teeny details:


  • Hands holding hands.
  • Tiny feet.
  • Family cuddles.
  • Silhouettes.
  • Running through a field.
  • Back-of-the-head moments.
  • Wide environmental shots.
  • Parent interactions.


Regular shots will be taken and included in your gallery, of course!


I've always believed the best photographs tell a story. Sometimes that story is in a laugh. Sometimes it's in a tiny hand reaching for mom. Sometimes it's simply the way your family loves each other. And it's still wholesome and beautiful.
